It is no secret that over time walls take a beating whether it may be from kids, pets, or just the daily wear and tear of life. Cleaning them periodically can help keep the walls of your house newer than they are. Wall marks and stains can be a hassle depending on how long they have been there for. Whether you rent or own, it is important to know how to properly remove any stains that may be present on your walls.

KNOW WHAT KIND OF PAINT IS ON THE WALL

Before you clean your walls though, it is important to take note of what kind of paint is on the wall. Semi-gloss or enamel paint will be able to stand up to washing. Flat, stain or eggshell finished paints may not be able to stand up to washing. Your walls should be dusted before they are washed, no matter what type of paint it is.

TRYING DIFFERENT CLEANERS

The best thing to try before any heavy duty cleaner is a simple mixture of soap and water. A couple drops of dishwashing liquid into warm water can really go a long way, and is gentler on wall paint as well. Using a microfiber cloth and gently rubbing the stain in a circular motion can help to lift the stain from the wall.

Another way to remove stains can be by using cleaning erasers. They can be found at almost any grocery store or online. Before using one of these though, you will want to spot test a very small area because cleaning erasers can work magic, but can also damage some finishes. Once it is tested and determined to be safe for your wall, you can gently rub the mark until it disappears.

Be careful not to scrub too hard, or you could worsen the stain. If the above two steps do not work for your wall stain, it could be time to consider using a heavy duty wall cleaner. Now there are many products on the market made for wall cleaning, choosing an all-purpose cleaner paired with a microfiber cloth usually will do the trick. Many people don’t try wall cleaners right off the bat because they do tend to be harsher on the wall paint. Again, be sure to do a spot test before scrubbing the stain.

4 Major Rules for the Best Exterior Home Paint Job

4 Major Rules for the Best Exterior Home Paint Job

If you are looking into painting the exterior of your home, you may have noticed that exterior paints are not the most glamorous of paint colors, typically they stick to a more neutral palette. Not to mention the limited range of color selection for front doors and shutters as well. Curb appeal is a very important factor to take into consideration when painting your home, especially if you are painting your house before listing it for the market.

It is important to keep in mind 4 major rules to follow if you are looking to get the best exterior home paint job.

• Consider Front door and Trim colors

• Pay Attention to Your Landscaping’

• Go for Quality of Paint

• Right Temperature & Climate

With these four factors in mind, the task of painting the exterior of your home will be a little easier to tackle.

FRONT DOOR AND TRIM COLOR

How many times a day are you walking up and down the stairs of your home thinking to yourself how worn and old the carpet on them is? You probably have wanted to update your stairs for a while but felt like the task was too much work. Good news, it doesn’t have to be! You can easily update your steps by removing old carpet and adding paint! You can even create dimension by painting the incline of steps, which will create a beautiful statement in any home.

THE PROPER LANDSCAPING

One element you may not realize that you have to consider when painting the exterior of your home is your landscaping. You might want to take a moment to consider the location of your home, elements around it and the curb appeal you are going for. Whether your home sits on a corner or is set back off the street can affect your decision as to what color you want to paint your home. You may also want to consider your neighborhood context, keeping in mind what other houses on your street have done.

If your home has a retaining wall or is closely surrounded by large, tall trees, then those factors may also play a part in choosing a color palette for your home’s exterior. If your home is surrounded by trees and therefore does not receive a lot of light, you may want to go with a lighter, brighter shade in order to make your house stand out from the shade.

QUALITY OF THE PAINT ALWAYS MATTERSThe task of exterior painting is no easy feat, and often times homeowners won’t take it on themselves, which is a smart decision. Another smart decision is to not skimp on quality of paint. Yes, exterior paint can be expensive, but having to repaint your home after just getting it done due to poor quality in paint is even more costly. Hiring a team of professionals to do the job right the first time will be less stressful, more efficient and overall provide the best result. An experienced painter will be able to suggest color, brand and quality of paint that is best suited for the style of your home and the material that is being painted.THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE & CLIMATE

You might not realize that the climate you live in can have an impact on the color you choose for your home’s exterior. If you live in a hotter climate, you should probably consider a lighter color because they absorb less heat and light than darker colors.

freshly painted bedroom

Another temperature consideration to take into account is what the weather will be like when scheduling or starting your exterior painting project. Keep in mind that you will need to schedule an exterior paint job for a time frame that is warm and dry. It is important to have a time frame that will allow for the exterior paint to properly dry so that it won’t crack or dry unevenly.

Are Expensive House Paints Worth the Price Tag?

Are Expensive House Paints Worth the Price Tag?

When looking into paint, whether for the interior or exterior of your home, the price tag can range pretty dramatically. This can leave many homeowners questioning what brands and price point they should be considering for their home project. Many people might try to save some money and go for a cheaper brand. Saving on price though, can leave the question of if a cheaper paint means sacrificing on the quality and durability of the paint.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND ABOUT CHEAPER PAINT

Paying less for paint may seem like a bonus, but often times, cheaper paint could mean that you need more of it to complete your project. Cheaper paint is typically made with a lower solids content, meaning that it has a reduced ability to provide even full coverage. This could mean that you have to paint on more than 1 or 2 coats, leading you to possibly having to buy more paint just to achieve an even coating.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT EXPENSIVE PAINTMore expensive paints will give you better coverage and typically last longer as well. Most times a more expensive paint will have a higher solids content. The more solids a paint has, the better it can hide and protect a surface. If you are painting the exterior of your home, you definitely want to purchase an expensive paint because you want something that is durable enough to last through changing weather elements. You should buy the most expensive paint that you can afford. Buying expensive paint doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to go for the designer brand names that you hear everywhere, in fact, the best quality paints are most likely hardware store brands with a slightly higher price tag.

Of course, it is important to consider the surface and/or color you are trying to paint over. Darker colors can be harder to paint over, requiring multiple layers of paint even with expensive brands. The difference is, a cheap brand of paint could take 5 or 6 coats of paint, while the expensive brand my only require 2. It is definitely worth paying for a paint with more solid to it so that you know you are getting more even coverage.

DON’T FORGET PRIMER!

One important step to remember before painting is to choose and start with a primer. Even if you are going to use high quality, expensive paint, prepping and priming your walls is an important step. This can include repairing holes, sanding, or washing walls. Primer helps to create an even surface before you begin painting. Also, when painting over a darker color, primer will help to cover up the dark paint so you may be able to use less coats to cover it up. A very important note to consider is to avoid any brand that says it is a “paint and primer” all in one. It is important not to skimp on quality of paint and to match, it is equally important to buy quality paint brushes to apply the paint with. It can be overwhelming to try to find the best materials for your project, but that is where we come into play! Hiring a team of professionals with years of experience will be the best way to ensure your project is completed correctly.

How to Choose Exterior Paint Colors for Your Home

How to Choose Exterior Paint Colors for Your Home

What you may not realize about the exterior of your home is that the color you choose could affect the look of your whole street. No pressure, right? A number of factors may come into play when it comes to making decisions about the aesthetic of your home front and yard. Below are a few tips that can help you to choose a color scheme that will work for both you and the surroundings of your home as well.

Exterior of home
PLAN AROUND ELEMENTS YOU AREN’T CHANGING

If you aren’t looking to do a complete exterior renovation, then it is good to take into consideration the color of your roof shingles or tiles, trim, stonework pathways and driveway material. These can play an important part when it comes to bringing a whole color scheme together. Be on the lookout for undertones between them that can unify your whole color palette.

Exterior of home
Exterior of home

Ask yourself if they are warmer colors, such as beige, khaki, brown or rust, or if they might be cooler colors like gray, black and blue. You want to choose an exterior paint color that will tie all of these fixed elements in harmoniously.

KNOW YOUR HOME’S ARCHITECTURAL STYLE AND ERA

The architectural style of your home can play a big part in choosing a color for your exterior paint. Many homeowners may not realize that certain styles of homes may only work with certain color palettes. Whether your home is Victorian, American Colonial or a modern ranch-style, each type of architecture yields its own unique influence of culture and style. This also means that often times, each style of home has certain colors that may work for it and others that will not.

Exterior of home

There are some paint manufacturers that will offer historically accurate colors which can be immensely helpful when creating your custom color palette for your home’s exterior painting. It can also be helpful to consult a professional who is well-versed in exterior painting and would be able to offer suggestions based on your home’s style and elements. While you don’t have to adhere strictly to historical guidelines of your home’s architectural style and era, it is important to keep it in mind. If you are really stuck, calling a professional consultant can also be a good idea.

Exterior of home
CHOOSE SEVERAL PAINT SHADES

Exterior painting may have more aspects to it than you might realize. There are are major areas you will want to keep in mind: field color, accent color and trim color. Typically you want the trim color to contrast strongly with the field color. Many homes you see will have white trim as it can brighten up a darker field color, but you can still opt for more of a monochromatic color scheme too. The offset of a dark main hue with a classic white trim or other pale shade can be a stunning upgrade to your home exterior. Some people like to also add a bold accent color by painting their door a bright color. Keep in mind though, overdoing it on the accent colors can have the adverse affect and ruin the aesthetic of your home.

Screen Shot 2019 06 17 at 12.55.00 PM 3
Another important thing to know is that exterior paint shades can vary greatly from how they may appear on a paint chip. An exterior paint job is a much bigger undertaking than simply painting a room or two. A good idea is to buy a small quart of paint in the color you want, paint a small section of your house and then view it at different times of the day and in various weather conditions. This can help you decide if you will like the look and feel of the color.WE’RE HERE TO HELP

An update to the exterior paint of your home can be just the bump it needs to bring it back to life. How Often Should You Repaint Your Home Interior

How Often Should You Repaint Your Home Interior

November 29, 2018

Some homeowners may wonder how often they should be repainting the interior surfaces of their home and how to know when a good time is. Most often, people will repaint the interior walls in order to update the color of a room, but even if you aren’t changing the color, it is good to occasionally repaint for general upkeep of your surfaces. It is inevitable, kids and pets can be a big contributing factor to wear and tear all around your home.

Many modern paints are engineered to last between 5 and 10 years, but there are some factors that may contribute to needing to repaint them earlier. Some walls in your home may need to be painted more frequently than others due to daily wear and tear. If you have frequent gatherings, kids and/or pets, you also might need to repaint some parts of your home more frequently than you might think.

Remodeled kitchen with new appliances
Painting the Hallways and Corridors

These areas will probably see a ton of scuff marks or even dents. Hallways tend to see a lot of action, especially if you are shuffling items or furniture from room to room. Your hallway sees so much foot traffic, and many times people walking down a hallway might bump their possessions into it causing scratches or scuff marks. It may be necessary for them to be painted every 2 to 3 years. Before painting, you will want to make sure that any dents or scratches are fixed.

Remodeled kitchen with new lighting fixtures
Kitchen, Bathroom and Laundry Room

These types of rooms are very busy and will probably need the most durable paints. You will need a paint that will be able to withstand being washed frequently. Bathrooms and laundry rooms are exposed to a lot of heat and humidity, so you want to find a paint that will withstand that as well as resist the formation of mildew. Kitchens see the most amount of traffic in homes, as they are a central gathering point in almost every household. Between entertaining guests or family dinners, your kitchen will probably see the most wear and tear in the house. Homeowners will usually want to repaint these types of rooms every 3-4 years.

Remodeled bathroom
Children’s Bedrooms

Children’s bedrooms often times take a beating when it comes to the paint on the walls. Not just scratches and dents, but if your child has ever drawn on the wall, then you know that your children’s walls are not as clean as you’d want them to be. Often times a child’s bedroom also doubles as their playroom and might see some abuse from toys. This may be the cause for you to need to repaint your children’s bedroom every 2-3 years in order to keep a fresh look on the walls. Another factor that contributes to repainting children’s bedrooms is their age. Your children’s bedroom color at 5 years old will be very different than what they will want at age 10 or when they are a teenager at age 13. Depending on how often you are willing to paint their room, your child’s wall color might change 3-5 times throughout their time living in your home.

Living Room and Dining Room

Your living room might see more action than your dining room, but typically these two rooms see a good amount of traffic. Although, you may not need to repaint them too frequently as the activity in these rooms tends to be more laid back and formal. Repainting these rooms for most homeowners only happens every 5 to 7 years. Not only is wear and tear a reason many people paint their walls, but also the ever changing shifts in trends is another factor. As home décor trends are always changing, some homeowners may feel the need to keep up with it more frequently than others. But it is important to keep up with what trends are popular so that your home doesn’t become too dated.

Remodeled kitchen with island

Of course, it always comes down to preference and how much you care about the appearance of your walls in your home. Taking into consideration the type of room, quality of the original paint job and current décor trends, will give you good indicators to help determine when you should be looking to repaint your walls. Each different type of room requires various amounts of prep work in order to be repainted, which is always something to consider.

Many homeowners take pride in the look and functionality of their backyard patio, especially for those who enjoy frequently entertaining guests. Depending on where you live, you might only be able to utilize your backyard during certain seasons of the year. Therefore, you want your backyard to look its best during the time it is usable.

DOES YOUR PATIO NEED TO BE UPDATED?

Whether you have a small or large backyard, a patio is a great place to entertain guests by having a cookout, a bonfire or just simply a relaxing night enjoying the fresh air and beautiful weather. If you are thinking of making some updates to your patio, take a moment to evaluate what your plan is with the patio space you currently have. If you are struggling with where to start, contacting a professional company to consult you is a good idea. Redoing your patio, yourself could result in frustration, spending over budget and what can seem like endless hours of work.

FRESHIN UP YOUR PATIO WITH A PAINT OR STAIN

Updating your backyard can be an exciting task, but also quite an undertaking if you are looking to change the whole layout of it. If you are looking for a small remodel on a budget, a good place to start is with a patio refresh. A patio refresh can be something as simple as painting and/or staining your current patio. Not only will it freshen up the look of your patio, but it will help to protect it from the wear and tear it will face over the coming months. It is important to use a paint or stain that is waterproof and features some level of UV protection in it.

20160520 104407.1

This can be a fun task if you choose to switch up the look of your patio area by staining it a darker color or maybe painting it a bright color to breathe some new light into an old space. Some people have even painted their deck with stencils or a design like a checkerboard to give it a cool new vibe. If you have a stone patio, then you could coat the surface with masonry stain, giving your stone a fresh glow.

YOUR PATIO OPTIONSIf you are looking to do a little more work than just a new coat of paint, you could consider a few options for your patio. There are easy renovations that can be done without turning into a major project. Smaller patios can easily be made out of pallets or a floating deck which can save you a lot of money on lumber. Many home improvement stores sell different variations of patio flooring options, such as interlocking deck tiles or other outdoor flooring that can easily be laid down over concrete or a flat surface.
Patio installation
You can perk up a patio by using pavers, which is a great option for upgrading a typical poured-concrete patio. Most often concrete pavers are moderately priced and come in a wide variety of options to choose from. In turn, they are also easier and less expensive to repair. Of course, depending on your time frame and budget, other types of stone can be used in order to achieve the look you are trying to achieve.ACCENTS TO YOUR PATIO ARE KEY

After you have done your patio renovations, adding some new accent pieces or furniture can be a great finishing touch. Whether it is some new throw pillows, rugs, plants or new chairs, a few small updates will go a long way. One great accent to add to any patio area are hanging lights. They are quick to hang up and can plug right in to any outlet. Accents are where you can really showcase your personal style and bring your patio to life.

Painting the interior or exterior of your home may seem like a doable task, but if you are not equipped with experience or the proper tools, it can be quite the undertaking. Hiring a reputable painting company to do the project for you has a ton of benefits. While you might think that doing the work yourself is a great money saving option, it often leads to mistakes and the need for going over budget trying to fix them. One of the top reasons that people are tentative to call a professional painting company is due to the cost. But when you weigh out the pros and cons, it is well worth the extra cost.
Exterior of home
GUARANTEED QUALITY RESULTS (AND WITH INSURANCE)While it may feel nice to say you painted it yourself, hiring a professional for your project will give you the all-around best result. The painter will know exactly how to prepare your walls for the project and which tools will be needed, like the best type of paint brush for the surface you are painting. It is very easy to tell the difference between a professional painting job and one done by someone with little experience. Experienced painters will make sure to meet all of your demands while paying attention to all the minor details you might not think of. They will provide the best quality paint job that won’t need to be fixed and will look great for years to come.

Don’t just hire anyone who claims to be a painter. You want a company that is backed by satisfied customers and known experience. It is advisable to hire a company that is insured with proper licensing. This means that if any accidents occur during the time of your project, the painter can make things right with their insurance. If any issues arise, a licensed professional would be equipped to correct the issue and cover the added costs.

A can of paint or two. That may be all you need to make the most of your space. If you are looking for a quick way to revamp different areas of your home but don’t have the time or financial means for a big renovation project, a little paint can go a long way. Whether you repaint, add an accent wall or totally change the color of a room it can upgrade the value of your whole home. Here are some tips on ways to utilize paint when looking to upgrade different areas of your home.

Remodeled kitchen
HOW TO PAINT YOUR STAIRSHow many times a day are you walking up and down the stairs of your home thinking to yourself how worn and old the carpet on them is? You probably have wanted to update your stairs for a while but felt like the task was too much work. Good news, it doesn’t have to be! You can easily update your steps by removing old carpet and adding paint! You can even create dimension by painting the incline of steps, which will create a beautiful statement in any home.HOW TO PAINT YOUR KITCHEN

The kitchen is a central place in any house where you spend a good amount of time, or a room where guests might migrate to when you have company over. Since your kitchen probably sees a lot of foot traffic, you want it to stand out with a great color scheme. If you feel like your cabinets are looking drab, but aren’t in the position to fully replace them, freshen them up with paint! Simply giving your old cabinets a fresh new paint job can totally transform the appearance of your whole kitchen. Adding new hardware is also a pretty simple and easy fix to upgrade the entire look of your cabinets.

Newly painted kitchen
While you don’t want to purchase overly fancy knobs for your cabinets, just a simple change in color or finish can make a big difference. If you still love your cabinets, consider painting your kitchen as a way to brighten up the room, adding an accent wall can really make a dull feeling kitchen pop.
Newly painted bathroom
HOW TO PAINT YOUR BATHROOMSince many bathrooms tend to be on the smaller side, many people opt to have them be vibrant colors with warm lighting in order to make the energy of the room more peaceful. If your bathroom currently has dull colors, adding pops of colors both on the walls or with towels, mats, etc will really liven up the small room. Sometimes painting a bathroom white can give off the illusion that the room is bigger than it actually is. Utilizing pops of color within the accents of the bathroom to offset the white will give your bathroom a fresh, clean feel.

Carpet is a pretty versatile material that is utilized throughout many homes today, but oftentimes after years of use, carpet can become worn and outdated. Many homeowners are beginning to make the switch from carpet to hardwood in many of the main areas of their homes. WOOD FLOORING BENEFITSWood floors are a great choice and have many benefits over carpeting, as they are easier to clean and also great for those with allergies. Whether the style of your home is modern, traditional or country, wood flooring has the versatility to work in any home. Some other benefits wood floors offer are:

• Low maintenance

• Strong and durable

• Enhance the look of your home

• Matches any décor

• Can be refinished

• Provide better air quality

Often times carpeting can get dirty and easily stain, therefore you might have to get them professionally cleaned often in order to feel like your home doesn’t have a musty or unclean feeling. With wood flooring, it is very easy to clean floors after a spill, and most times you do not have to worry about it staining.TYPES OF WOOD FLOORINGThere are many colors, finishes, and sizes to choose from when it comes to flooring. The main choices are between laminate flooring, traditional hardwood or engineered hardwoods. Laminate is usually a cheaper option but can be very easy to spot. The hardwood options are similar, but traditional hardwood can be more expensive and harder to install on your own, although this kind of flooring will probably last you a really long time. Engineered hardwood floors can cost the same or slightly more than traditional hardwood flooring but are much easier to install on your own.

There are also floating hardwood floors, which can be installed directly on top of the subfloor. This kind has a tongue-and-groove snap together system. As a homeowner, it is totally up to you and what style of wood flooring you are going for, most likely a style that will match your kitchen color scheme and appliances.WHAT TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN IT COMES TO REMOVING YOUR CARPET AND INSTALLING HARDWOOD FLOORSThere are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to removing your carpet and installing hardwood floors. You will need to make sure the carpet is removed properly so that there is enough room for the new wood flooring to be laid down. For those who have some experience with handy work, you might be just fine putting new flooring in yourself, but as mentioned before it can be a little harder than you realize.

When ripping out the carpeting, you have to be extra careful around the edges of the room where the carpet is attached to the subfloor by nail strips that run along the room’s perimeter. You have to be extra careful when removing this perimeter as the nails are sharp, so proper disposal is important. You will most likely have to remove the trim in the room in order to access the tack strips used to hold the carpet in place. These are important steps in order to prepare the floor for the hardwood to be laid down.

Carpet is a pretty versatile material that is utilized throughout many homes today, but oftentimes after years of use, carpet can become worn and outdated. Many homeowners are beginning to make the switch from carpet to hardwood in many of the main areas of their homes. Not only does wood flooring look more modern but in most cases, it is easier to maintain. While some might take this project on themselves, it can be a bigger task than you might realize.

WAIT FOR WARM WEATHER TO PAINT YOUR HOUSE EXTERIOR

It is important to be cautious when choosing the right time to paint the exterior of your home. It can be worthwhile to wait until the weather is consistently warm, which for states like Connecticut, doesn’t usually happen until June.

Spring can have warm days but are typically followed by very cold night time temperatures. Painting during the unpredictable spring weather can risk poor paint application. This is why holding off until the summer months can produce the best results. Spring months may also bring long stretches of rainy days.

Waiting until the weather dries out is important in order to give your home’s siding a chance to dry out after months of winter snow and spring rain. Experienced contractors, like our team, will be cautious in checking when wet weather may be on the horizon and be able to find the perfect time for the exterior of your home to be painted.LOOK FOR IDEAL CONDITIONSSome homeowners may not be able to control when they until the summer to paint their home exterior, opting for the late spring or early fall months to do so. Many painters don’t mind stretching the painting season to be as long as possible, but also keep in mind that painting during consistent weather temperature is the most important factor. Weather conditions can change from year to year depending on the area you are located in. The trickiest part of exterior painting is choosing a day to paint, because as we know, weather can be very unpredictable at any time.

The brand of paint you choose can also play a factor in how well your paint dries during the painting of your exterior. All brands and types of paint vary in how they finish once they are dry, which is why consulting a professional painting company is the best way to ensure that you are purchasing the correct paint for your home exterior. While this all may seem overwhelming, most times it is pretty easy to find a time frame where the weather will cooperate.
