It is no secret that over time walls take a beating whether it may be from kids, pets, or just the daily wear and tear of life. Cleaning them periodically can help keep the walls of your house newer than they are. Wall marks and stains can be a hassle depending on how long they have been there for. Whether you rent or own, it is important to know how to properly remove any stains that may be present on your walls.

KNOW WHAT KIND OF PAINT IS ON THE WALL

Before you clean your walls though, it is important to take note of what kind of paint is on the wall. Semi-gloss or enamel paint will be able to stand up to washing. Flat, stain or eggshell finished paints may not be able to stand up to washing. Your walls should be dusted before they are washed, no matter what type of paint it is.

TRYING DIFFERENT CLEANERS

The best thing to try before any heavy duty cleaner is a simple mixture of soap and water. A couple drops of dishwashing liquid into warm water can really go a long way, and is gentler on wall paint as well. Using a microfiber cloth and gently rubbing the stain in a circular motion can help to lift the stain from the wall.

Another way to remove stains can be by using cleaning erasers. They can be found at almost any grocery store or online. Before using one of these though, you will want to spot test a very small area because cleaning erasers can work magic, but can also damage some finishes. Once it is tested and determined to be safe for your wall, you can gently rub the mark until it disappears.

Be careful not to scrub too hard, or you could worsen the stain. If the above two steps do not work for your wall stain, it could be time to consider using a heavy duty wall cleaner. Now there are many products on the market made for wall cleaning, choosing an all-purpose cleaner paired with a microfiber cloth usually will do the trick. Many people don’t try wall cleaners right off the bat because they do tend to be harsher on the wall paint. Again, be sure to do a spot test before scrubbing the stain.
